This 9 week course teaches everything you need to know to start your sewing journey. Tailored specifically for the beginner sewer, this courses teaches sewing techniques through a combination of hands on theory and projects, giving you the confidence to measure, cut and sew at home.

Class sizes are limited to four students allowing for one on one teaching and student specific tailored teaching. Audsley has over 15 years experience tutoring students with a range of learning needs, and prides herself on providing tailored teaching to each students needs/speed.

Course Specifics:
All materials, tools and machine use are included in the course cost.
Workbook including comprehensive reference notes, theory, skills and project patterns with instructions included.
This course is gender neutral.

Preference is given to certified organic, deadstock and recycled fabric for all projects.
Audsley Sarah Designs is proudly a zero waste studio, all fabric scraps and thread are re-purposed and given a new life.

Time: 13.5 hours over 9 classes (90 minutes each)

Skills and Projects:
Project One: Fabric Tote

  • basic sewing stitches and finishing

  • sewing in a straight line

  • sewing on a curve

  • sewing with lining

  • using webbing

  • bag reinforcement stitches

  • how too and the importance of pressing

Project Two: Boxy Zipper Case

  • sewing with lining

  • inserting standard zipper

  • sewing with tabs

Project Three: Merchant and Mills Tee Shirt or Merchant and Mills Camber Top (pattern included in course cost)

  • taking measurements

  • basic pattern adjustments

  • cutting out pattern pieces

  • how to read a commercial pattern

  • sewing with yokes (Camber Top only)

  • inserting neckbands

  • easing sleeves

  • seam finishing

Other Skills:

  • common sewing tools and how to use them

  • anatomy of a sewing machine, feet, machine needles

  • fabric basics

  • finishing and seaming techniques

  • key techniques: buttonholes, zippers etc.

  • all about commercial/indie sewing patterns
