Make Nine 2023 - With a Twist

Hello 2023! I must admit I have taken an extended break off journaling and socials, 2022 was one heck of year and the need to decompress and reflect was greatly needed.

So here I am writing my first journal post of 2023 and what better way than reflecting on my makes of 2022 and plan for the year ahead. As with every year, I go in with great intentions, big dreams, and a desire to sew the patterns and reserved fabric stored in my stash. And every year all planning goes out the window. I must admit, with the sewing school launching, I am sewing more, but less for myself. Creating patterns and samples takes time, energy and a greater pressing need than personal sewing.

When reflecting on my Make Nine 2022, I sewed two of the specified makes, however what was more interesting, the remaining seven were actually replaced by different makes, but within the same families. An example is the plan to sew the Deer and Doe Pavot Coat, this required patience, headspace and time, something I was lacking. However, completing the Tamarack Jacket by Grainline Studio was simple, quick and filled the same void in my closet.

So this year, instead of specifying specific patterns to sew, I am going to specify areas of my wardrobe which are lacking variety, have aged (aged in the sense it’s time to retire the worn out garment) and suit my changing needs. Last year I moved to working from home full time, this in itself bought a change in wardrobe, but also when I did have external meetings, I lacked professional one off pieces (rather than the everyday office clothes I once wore). Teaching has also added another layer, wearing me made clothes, but comfortable, fun, professional but also functional has become a high priority. These thoughts and needs will drive my makes, and my utilitarian nature will drive the timing of these. Rather than setting 2023 in stone, I am letting it evolve with my changing circumstance, needs and events.

So here we go, my Make Nine 2023…
