Let’s talk about fabric

When embarking on a new sewing project, the heavy weighted question always is… what fabric should I use?

Here are some questions to ask yourself before you purchase or cut into your next project.

1.     What are the recommended fabrics specified on the pattern envelope?
Designers will provide recommendations that work well with the design, you are not at all constrained to them, but they are a fantastic starting point.

2.     Is the pattern for woven or knit fabrics?
Yes there is a difference, and yes it will affect your finished garment. Knitted fabric patterns are typically designed for negative ease (the fabric will “stretch” to the final measurements), whereas woven fabric patterns are designed with positive ease (ease being the gap between your body and fabric). By picking the right fabric type, you are ensuring a good fit.

3.     What fabric weight would you like? And how will this affect the drape?
Along with recommended fabrics on the pattern envelope, recommended weights will also be provided. It is good to think about weight in a sense of wearability but also drape, if a heavier weight is used, the fabric will be more stiff and will fall differently. On the flip side if you use a light weight fabric, be careful with seams and hemming as this will add weight to concentrated areas and also affect drape.

4.     When will I be wearing the garment?
Practicality is key! You want to be able to wear your garment in situations you intended it for. This may affect the fabric type you use.

5.     Do I need lining?
This is a twofold question, does the pattern specify lining? and based on my chosen material, do I need it. And do I need to add lining in? This is something to keep in mind if a sheer fabric is chosen.

6.     And finally, could I source my fabric from my stash, vintage sheets/table cloths and second hand stores? Textile waste is an increasing environmental issue, and one as home sewers we have an impact on (and can actually have a massive voice in). Always ask, where has my fabric come from?
